Reach

Reach is the number of different accounts that saw a post or story. Unlike views, someone who watches three times still counts only once.

What is reach?

Reach counts people, or more precisely accounts: how many different Instagram accounts saw a post or story at least once. Someone who watches a story three times is one account reached and three story views. That makes reach the number to look at when the question is how many people heard about the night.

Reach is always lower than views and usually far lower than the follower count. Only part of an audience opens stories on any given day, and Instagram decides whose stories come first in the row. A story that reaches a quarter or a third of the followers is often a normal result; reach close to the full follower count is rare.

How reach is measured

Instagram measures reach for professional (business or creator) accounts and shows it in Insights for each post and story. Only the account owner sees it, plus any app they have connected, so the real number cannot be read from outside. For a campaign across several promoters, adding up each story's reach overcounts: someone who follows two of the promoters is counted twice, so the true number of people reached is somewhat lower than the sum.

Reach also behaves differently for stories and feed posts. A story reaches mostly existing followers within its 24 hours. A feed post or reel can reach non-followers through Explore and recommendations, and keeps collecting reach for days.

Example: reach against views

Say five promoters post a story for a club night in Dresden. Their Insights show 3,400 accounts reached and 4,600 views in total; some friends watched twice, so views are higher. Because several of the promoters share followers, the number of different people who saw at least one story is lower than 3,400, perhaps closer to 3,000. That is the realistic size of the audience the campaign spoke to, and the figure to hold against the tickets sold.

Tips for more reach

  • Compare reach with reach and views with views. Mixing them makes any promoter look better or worse than they are.
  • Ask promoters for their typical story reach, not their follower count.
  • Post when your city is on its phone: in the evening, and on the afternoon of the night itself.
  • Many voices beat one loud one. Several promoters reach different circles; one account reaches the same circle every time.

Common questions

What is the difference between reach and impressions?
Reach counts different accounts; impressions, which Instagram now reports as views, count every time the content was shown. One person watching three times is one account reached and three views.
Why is my story reach lower than my follower count?
Only part of your audience opens stories on a given day, and Instagram orders the story row by who each person interacts with. Reach well below follower count is normal.
Can I see someone else's reach?
No. Reach is only visible to the account owner and to apps they have connected. Anyone else has to ask for a screenshot of Insights.
