Story views

Story views count how often an Instagram story was shown, repeat views included. Only the account owner and apps they connect see the real number.

What are story views?

Story views are the number of times a story was shown on screen. If the same person watches it twice, that is two views. Instagram has replaced "impressions" with "views" as its main count across stories, posts and reels, so older guides that talk about story impressions mean roughly the same thing.

The view count is not the viewer list. The list of who watched shows accounts, once each, and anyone who posts a story can see it; the view count in Insights includes repeats and is only available on professional accounts. Neither is visible to anyone else, which is why an organizer has to rely on screenshots, or on an app the promoter has connected, to know what a story really did.

How story views add up

Most of a story's views come in the first hours after posting, from followers who open their story row. They taper off over the rest of the 24 hours. A story with several frames collects views per frame, and the first frame usually has the most, because people tap away before the end.

Views say how much attention a story got; reach says how many people it got it from. For pricing, views are the usual unit: a CPM is the cost per 1,000 views.

Example: one story, one day

Say a promoter in Stuttgart with 2,500 followers posts a two-frame story at 19:00 on a Thursday. By midnight the first frame has 520 views; by the next evening it has 690, from 610 accounts. The second frame, with the ticket link, has 430 views. That drop from the first frame to the second is normal, and it is why the most important information belongs on the first one.

Tips for more story views

  • Put the date, the venue and the name of the night on the first frame.
  • Post in the evening, when your followers are on their phones, and again on the day.
  • Keep it to one to three frames. Every extra frame loses viewers.
  • For promoters: keep track of your typical views. It is the number organizers care about, more than followers.

Story views on Parmo

Parmo reads views from Instagram Insights on each verified story, with the promoter's permission, so organizers see real numbers instead of screenshots. Promoters see the views of every story under My stories, and their average over the last 20 verified stories appears on their public page. The benchmarks show typical views per story and per 1,000 followers across Parmo.

Common questions

Does watching a story twice count as two views?
Yes. Views include repeats; reach counts each account only once.
Can other people see how many views my story has?
No. Only you see the number, in Insights on a professional account, plus any app you have connected to your Instagram.
Why do my story views drop after the first frame?
People tap forward or leave before the end, so each frame loses some viewers. Put the key information on the first one.
