Early bird
Early bird tickets are the cheapest tier of an event, sold first and in limited numbers to reward the people who commit before everyone else.
What is an early bird ticket?
Early bird is the first and cheapest price tier of a pre-sale. A club night might sell 100 early bird tickets at €12, then move to a regular tier at €16 and a final tier at €20, with the box office at €22. When the early bird tier is gone, it is gone.
For the organizer, early bird is less about the discount and more about information and cash flow. Early sales show whether the line-up works, pay the first bills (the venue deposit, the headliner's flights, the print run) and create a little urgency, because the next tier already costs more.
How early bird pricing works
A typical set-up, with the details varying by event:
- Tiers are released in order. Each has a fixed number of tickets, and the next one opens when the previous sells out or on a set date.
- Early bird usually goes on sale with the first announcement, sometimes before the full line-up is out.
- The gap between early bird and the door is often a few euros for a club night and can be much larger for a festival.
- Some organizers give regulars or newsletter subscribers access before the public sale.
Example: an open-air in Munich
Say a crew in Munich announces an open-air for 1,500 people. They release 300 early bird tickets at €25, which sell out in four days. That tells them the demand is real, and the €7,500 in the account covers the stage hire deposit. The regular tier at €32 opens the same day, and the stories announcing "early bird sold out" become the next push. Had the tier sold only 80 in the first week, that would have been just as useful to know, months before anyone builds a stage.
Tips for an early bird tier
- Keep the tier small enough to sell out. A sold-out early bird is news in itself.
- Announce the price jump in advance, with a date or a ticket count.
- Time the release with a wave of stories and posts: early bird lives or dies on reach in its first days.
- Say how many early bird tickets there are. "200 at €12" convinces more people than "limited".
- Do not run an early bird tier forever. If it never ends, it is simply the price.
Common questions
- When do early bird tickets go on sale?
- Usually with the first announcement of the event, weeks or months before the date. Follow the organizer or sign up to their newsletter to catch them.
- Are early bird tickets refundable?
- That depends on the organizer and the ticket shop. Early bird tickets usually follow the same terms as the rest, and many events only refund if the event is cancelled.
