Drink balance

A drink balance is a fixed amount a guest or promoter can spend at the bar, handed out as a reward instead of cash or free entry.

What is a drink balance?

A drink balance is credit at the bar. Instead of money, someone gets an amount, say €20, that they can turn into drinks during the night. In practice it comes as drink tokens, a stamped card, a wristband loaded with credit or a name on a list behind the bar.

For organizers it is one of the cheapest ways to say thank you. A drink sold for €5 usually costs the bar a fraction of that, so a €20 balance costs the house far less than €20 in cash. That is why it has long been a currency for promoters, helpers and the friends of the DJs, alongside the guest list.

How a drink balance works in practice

The organizer sets the amount and the way it is redeemed before the night. At the door or the bar the person identifies themselves with a name, a code word or a token, and the bar staff know how much they can serve. Most clubs add rules: valid that night only, no change, no cash-out, sometimes no bottles or shots.

The less visible part is the bookkeeping. If five promoters each have €30 of credit, somebody has to know who has used what, or the balance turns into an open tab.

Example: €25 at the bar

Say an organizer offers promoters a €25 drink balance for posting a story before the weekend. The bar sells a beer for €4.50 and a long drink for €9. One promoter orders two long drinks and a beer, which comes to €22.50. The remaining €2.50 expire at closing, as the organizer said up front.

Tips for giving a drink balance

  • Pick a round amount that buys something real: enough for two or three drinks, not €7.30.
  • Tell the bar before doors open. The nicest reward turns awkward when the bartender has never heard of it.
  • State the rules once: tonight only, no cash, and what is excluded.
  • Promoters: collect it early. A balance you forget about at 4 am is gone.

Drink balance on Parmo

A drink balance is one of the three rewards an organizer can offer on Parmo, next to guest list and VIP. The organizer sets a fixed amount in the event's currency when creating the event, and can grade it by follower bands. It goes to promoters whose stories were verified as online for the full window.

It is collected at the door with the promoter's code words, and the organizer checks them in once. Parmo does not pay out the balance or move any money; the organizer honours it at their own bar. See Rewards, explained.

Common questions

What are drink tokens?
Drink tokens are coins or paper tickets a club hands out that can be swapped for a drink at the bar. They are a common way to give guests, staff or promoters a drink balance.
Can a drink balance be paid out in cash?
Almost never. A drink balance is only valid at the bar, and usually only on the night it was given.
