Club night

A club night is a named party inside a club, weekly, monthly or one-off, built around its DJs, its sound and a crowd that keeps coming back for it.

What is a club night?

A club night is a party with its own name and identity that takes place in a club. The venue provides the room, the sound system, the bar and often the door. The night itself is frequently run by a crew or promoter who brings the line-up, the artwork and the crowd. Many run as a series (weekly, monthly or a few times a year), and some move between venues.

What makes a club night work is recognition. People come because they know the sound and trust the booking, not only for one name on the bill. That is why so many nights are built around a resident DJ and a core of regulars, with guests added on top.

How a club night runs

A typical Saturday in a German city: doors at 23:00, the floor fills slowly after midnight, the peak comes between 2 and 4, and the night closes at 6 or later where the licence allows. The warm-up DJ plays the first slot, the headliner the peak, and a resident or a closer finishes the night.

Promotion starts two to four weeks ahead with the line-up announcement and then picks up in the final week: stories from the crew, the DJs and the promoters, a guest list, and a presale that closes on the day. After closing, part of the crowd often moves on to an afterhour.

Example: a monthly techno night in Leipzig

Say a monthly techno night in Leipzig plays a club with room for 500. The crew and the club have agreed that the club keeps the bar and the crew keeps the door takings after costs. Tickets are €15 in presale and €20 on the door. With a guest DJ, two locals, promotion and door staff to pay, the crew needs roughly 300 paying guests to break even. Everything above that is profit or goes into next month's booking.

In this example, around half of the presale comes in during the last week. Stories and messages from people the guests already know tend to do most of that work, which is why many crews concentrate their promotion there rather than spreading it evenly.

Tips for running a club night

  • Give the night a name and a consistent look, so a story is recognised before anyone reads it.
  • Announce the line-up early and the timetable late. Both are reasons for people to post.
  • Build on regulars and residents and add guests, not the other way round.
  • Agree in writing with the venue who gets the door, who gets the bar and who pays for what.
  • In Germany, check whether the club or the crew registers the night with GEMA for the music.

Club nights on Parmo

"Club Night" is one of the categories an organizer picks when creating an event on Parmo. Once published, the night has its own event page, appears on the organizer's brand page and on the public event pages for its city, including a page per category and genre. Promoters nearby find it, request to join and post the story from the app. The reward (guest list, drink balance or VIP) follows once Parmo has verified that the story stayed up.

In Germany most club nights open between 23:00 and midnight, fill up after 1 and peak between 2 and 4 in the morning.
How do you promote a club night?
Announce the line-up two to four weeks ahead, then concentrate stories, guest list and presale in the final week, when most people decide.
