Afterhour

An afterhour is a party that starts when the clubs close, usually around 5 or 6 in the morning, and runs on into the next day.

What is an afterhour?

An afterhour (also called after hours or an afterparty) is a party that opens when the regular club night ends. Doors usually open somewhere between 5 and 7 in the morning, and it runs into the late morning or the afternoon, sometimes through the whole of Sunday. The music tends to pick up where the night left off: deep, hypnotic or hard techno and house, played to a crowd that has already been out for hours.

It is a scene thing more than a mainstream one. Afterhours happen in small clubs, in bars with a late licence, or in a club that simply keeps one floor open after the main room closes. In cities without a general closing time, like Berlin, the line between a long club night and an afterhour is blurry. Elsewhere, local licensing and closing hours decide whether one is possible at all.

How an afterhour works in practice

The crowd comes from somewhere else, so the promotion happens during the night rather than the week before. Organizers tell their regulars on the Friday, share the location late, and rely on stories posted from the main event around 3 or 4 in the morning: afterhour from 6, details in the link. Entry is often cheaper than the night before, sometimes free before a set time, and the door cares more about the state people are in than about what they wear.

The bill is short: often one or two DJs playing long sets, frequently a resident DJ who knows how to hold a tired room. The energy curve is different from a rave at peak time. It starts high, flattens into something more hypnotic by mid-morning and ends when the last people leave or the licence runs out.

Example: a Sunday morning in Frankfurt

Say a techno club in Frankfurt closes its main floor at 5. A crew runs an afterhour in a bar ten minutes away, with room for 150 people, doors at 5:30 and €10 entry. Until 7 it fills with people from two or three clubs nearby. By 9 the room is full, and the last track plays at 14:00.

In this example, most of the 150 heard about it that same night, from stories and from friends in the queue. That is typical for afterhours: a few well-timed stories at 3 in the morning can do more than a week of posts, because they reach people at the exact moment they decide where to go next. The same logic applies to an open air that runs into a morning session.

Tips for organizers

  • Post late. Stories between 2 and 4 in the morning reach the people who are still out and deciding what comes next.
  • Say the start time and the entry rules clearly, including the price and whether people can leave and come back.
  • Keep the capacity realistic. A full small room at 9 feels better than a half-empty big one.
  • Check licensing and noise rules before you announce anything. An afterhour shut down at 9 is a bad advert for the next one.
  • Plan for water, daylight and a staff handover. Your guests have been out all night, and so have your bar and door staff.

Afterhours on Parmo

"Afterhour" is one of the categories an organizer picks when creating an event on Parmo. Once published, the night appears on the public event pages for its city, which also have a page per category and genre. Promoters can post their story in the early hours of the night itself, and it counts once Parmo has verified through Instagram that it stayed online for the window the organizer set.

Common questions

What time does an afterhour start?
Usually between 5 and 7 in the morning, when the regular clubs close. Some start earlier on nights when the main club shuts at 4.
Is an afterhour the same as an afterparty?
Mostly, yes. An afterparty can also be a private party after a concert, while an afterhour usually means a public party with DJs in the morning.
Are afterhours legal?
Yes, when the venue has the right licence and follows local closing and noise rules. The rules differ from city to city, so organizers check them before announcing.
