Street team

A street team is a group of promoters working one event, venue or brand together: once with flyers and posters, today mostly with Instagram stories.

What is a street team?

A street team is a group of people who spread the word for an event, a band or a brand, usually in return for free entry, merch or a small fee. The name comes from where the work used to happen: street teams put up posters, handed out flyers outside other clubs and left stacks in record shops and bars.

The idea has not changed, only the street. A street team today is ten or twenty promoters posting Instagram stories in the same week, each to their own circle. Its strength is what it always was: many people, each trusted by different friends, saying the same thing at the same time. One ad reaches a lot of people once; a street team makes a night feel like something everyone is going to.

How a street team works

Someone on the organizing side runs the team: they recruit the members, hand out the material and keep track of who did what. Before each event the team gets the same brief, the same flyer and the same dates. Members post, bring their friends, and are rewarded per event, most often with guest list, drinks or merch. Good teams stay together across events, so each new night starts with people who already know the crowd and the sound.

Example: a team for a monthly party

Say a monthly house party in Nuremberg has a street team of fifteen. A week before each edition the team lead sends the flyer and asks for two stories: one on the Monday, one on the day. Every member gets guest list plus one. Over a year the lead notices that five members bring most of the guests, and that stories posted on the day work better than the Monday ones. The next season those five get a VIP upgrade, and the Monday post is dropped.

Tips for running a street team

  • Keep the team small enough to know everyone by name. Fifteen reliable people beat fifty occasional ones.
  • Give everyone the same material and the same dates, so the stories land together.
  • Reward consistency. Members who show up every month should notice that it counts.
  • Track who brings people, not just who posts. Names or code words at the door make that visible.

Street teams on Parmo

An organizer can save the promoters who worked a night as a group, for example "Techno crew", and invite the whole group to the next event in one step. Promoters who already had a verified story at one of your events are listed under "Worked with you before", with their rating and their last night. See Invite promoters and build groups.
